AMD Ryzen 8040 “Hawk Point” APUs For 2024 Laptop Lineup Revealed, Zen 4 & RDNA 3 Refresh

AMD’s 2024 laptop APU lineup which includes the Ryzen 8040 “Hawk Point” series has been leaked with several SKU names now out of the bag.

AMD 2024 Hawk Point APUs Refresh Phoenix “Zen 4 & RDNA 3” Under Ryzen 8040 Family For Laptops

In terms of what the AMD Ryzen 8040 “Hawk Point” SKUs will offer, they are a refresh of the existing Ryzen 7040 “Phoenix” family. Phoenix APUs are still in high demand and AMD would first offer the family a refresh before moving to the bigger upgrades in the form of the Strix Ryzen 8050 series which is planned for mid of 2024. These APUs will reutilize the Zen 4 core architecture and offer compatibility with the FP7/r2 and FP8 platforms while featuring support for DDR5/LPDDR5x memory. Moreover, Hawk Point APUs will be confined to the same RDNA 3 graphics architecture.

  • Zen 4 (4nm) Monolithic Design
  • Up To 8 Cores
  • 12 RDNA 3 Compute Units
  • XDNA Engine Integrated
  • Q1 Launch (Expected)

Moving on to the new list shared by Harukaze5719, it looks like AMD plans on retaining the conventional naming scheme, which is similar to what we saw with the Phoenix family. The APUs are yet again divided into two different segments, the H-series, and the U-series, both coming with different TDP segments.

While we haven’t seen an extensive leak in terms of what the above-mentioned segments will offer, we did see AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 9 8940HS in action, which showed decent performance and is in line with what we should expect from a refresh.

In a previous leak, we saw Phoenix3 and Phoenix4 IDs surfacing on the PCI ID Repository, which suggested that AMD has designated the codenames to the Ryzen 8040 series. If we look at how the Ryzen 8040 APUs will position themselves in the market, it seems like the laptop segment is going to benefit the most from it, especially by utilizing the “HS-series” variants, since they are rumored to bring decent performance efficiency onboard. However, the greater excitement is in how Hawk  Point APUs will contribute to the handheld industry, which did see some limitations in terms of the SKUs applicable for the segment. The full SKU list includes:

  • Ryzen 9 8940H
  • Ryzen 7 8840H
  • Ryzen 5 8640H
  • Ryzen 7 8840HS
  • Ryzen 5 8640HS
  • Ryzen 7 8840U
  • Ryzen 5 8640U
  • Ryzen 7 PRO 8840U
  • Ryzen 5 PRO 8640U

The AMD Ryzen 8040 “Hawk Point” APU family is expected to debut at CES 2024 and we are also going to see AMD’s first AM5 desktop APU products soon which allegedly adopt the Ryzen 8000 branding too. Expect more information soon on these upcoming APUs, as we near the launch period.
