Minisforum entered the MoTD (Mobile on Desktop) motherboard platform with strong AMD & Intel CPU options. We recently tested out their BD770i (AMD Ryzen 7 7745HX) and AD650i (Intel Core i7-12650H) motherboards. Now, the manufacturer has finally released its BD790i (Ryzen 9 7945HX) 16 core CPU variant as its most high-performance offering.
Coming to the specifications, the Minisforum BD790i MoTD motherboard offers the AMD Ryzen 9 7945HX CPU which is the top Ryzen 7000 mobility SKU besides the 7945HX3D. The CPU comes with 16 cores and 32 threads based on the Zen 4-core architecture. The CPU has a base clock of 2.5 GHz and a boost clock of 5.4 GHz coupled with 64 MB of L3 cache plus 16 MB of L2 cache. The chip adopts a 55W nominal TDP which can be adjusted up to 75W plus there’s overclocking support.
The motherboard on the Minisforum BD790i MoTD motherboard features a 6+2 phase design that is powered by an 8-pin connector and a standard 24-pin ATX plug. The motherboard offers two M.2 (Gen 5×4) slots and two DDR5 SO-DIMM slots which support up to 64 GB capacities at speeds of up to 5200 MT/s. The best part is that there’s a single PCIe 5.0 x16 slot that can support GPUs of up to NVIDIA RTX 4090 and AMD RX 7900 XTX.
For cooling, there are two massive heatsinks, one with an active cooler for the M.2 slots and one for the CPU & VRM which is the larger of the two aluminum heatsinks equipped with several heat pipes and fins. You can mount a 120mm fan on top of this chassis for even better cooling performance.
It comes with great I/O too in the form of an HDMI 2.1, DP 1.4, 2.5GbE LAN port, a single USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port, two USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A ports, and 2 USB 2.0 ports. There are also additional connectors on the motherboard including four 4-pin fan headers. The motherboard measures the standard Mini-ITX layout of 170x170x1.6mm.
