NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs are starting to see a major price surge in the US following reports of restrictions in China.
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs Are Now Becoming More Expensive & Harder To Find In The US
The last few days have been a rollercoaster with the US government expanding its restrictions on AI GPUs for the Chinese market. The most recent import restrictions included the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090, a consumer-focused graphics card, which caused a lot of panic within the Chinese market and led to the pricing of the card doubling in the region overnight.
It is now reported that prices of the GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs have started to normalize but the effects of these price hikes are now being felt across the globe. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card was relatively easy to find with decent quantities across various retailers and the pricing was more or less stable around its MSRP of $1599 US. But now, there are barely any RTX 4090 models available at $1599 US and the cheapest you can find one for is at or over $1700 US.
Starting with Newegg, the cheapest model of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 is listed for $1766.44 US which is 10.5% higher than the MSRP. At B&H Photo, the cheapest model is listed for $1619.99 US but none of the cards are available at the moment for purchase. At Amazon, the cheapest model is starting at $1699.99 US or $100 US more than the MSRP. Similarly, at BestBuy, the MSI RTX 4090 Gaming X SLIM starts at $1699.99 US but it is the only variant available at the moment with all other models out of stock.

Also, this price increase is only specific to the GeForce RTX 4090 as all other NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 and AMD Radeon RX 7000 GPUs are available at or below MSRP. It is possible that US-based shops are keeping an eye out for recent developments and looking for an opportunity to adjust the prices of the flagship RTX 4090 if the demand surges. These cards could become a valuable commodity for scalpers who might try to sell them to Chinese customers for much higher prices.

With that said, it is likely going to be a temporary price hike that should start to normalize by the end of this year. There’s also the holiday season coming up so that might further lead to shortage of the GeForce RTX 4090 as gamers and customers purchase what is single-handily the fastest GPU for gaming right now.
